SPORT MASSAGE

Sport massage describes a set of techniques used to manipulate the muscles and soft tissues of the body with hands, elbows, forearms, fists and knuckles. It may sound a little intimidating but rest assured, this technique of massage is not just for sports people or athletes and can be catered to your individual needs.

The benefits of sport massage are numerous and can include the following:

  • Increased circulation to the area being treated, this can lead to faster recovery and speedy removal of waste products such as lactic acid.

  • Improved range of movement. By helping to regulate the messages that the brain sends to the muscles, the body can move with more freedom and control post treatment giving you increased range of movement at certain joints.

  • Reduction in pain. There are several theories on how this can work with massage, direct stimulation of the soft tissue can alter the mechanism of how pain reaches the brain, it can also alter the tissue structure, reorganising the cells and fibres, allowing it to work in a more functional way.

  • Breakdown of scar tissue. Scar tissue can have a big affect on body function as a whole, especially scars from surgery. Massage can help break down areas of scar tissue allowing for increased circulation in the area and reduce adhesions.

  • Relaxation. Research has shown massage to be beneficial in bringing on feelings of relaxation, reducing stress, anxiety and tension.

TREATMENT

At your first session, if you haven't been treated at Nidd Valley Physio before, you will be asked some general information which will take around 10 minutes. It is suggested that for your first session you book in for a 45 minute or 60 minute session to allow for this.

A treatment plan will be made to decide where you would like your treatment to be focused, i.e. you may want an hour long back massage or an hour long full body massage. you will be asked throughout the session whether the pressure is suitable and encouraged to give feed back if the pressure is too little or not enough.

You will likely be asked to undress for your massage so please wear appropriate loose fitting clothing and appropriate underwear.
